The Canada Gazette

As the official newspaper of the Government of Canada published since 1841, the Canada Gazette is one of the vehicles that Canadians can use to access the laws and regulations that govern their daily lives.

Government departments and agencies as well as stakeholders from the private sector are required by law to publish certain information in the Canada Gazette. The official newspaper is published under the authority of the Statutory Instruments Act and of the Statutory Instruments Regulations.

The Canada Gazette contains formal public notices, official appointments, proposed regulations, regulations and public Acts of Parliament from government departments and agencies. It also contains miscellaneous public notices from the private sector.

The Canada Gazette serves as a consultative tool between the Government of Canada and Canadians. It gives Canadians the opportunity to provide their comments on the proposed regulations published in the Canada Gazette, Part I. For each of the proposed regulations listed, there is a contact name from the relevant department or agency and a closing date for comments. Anyone who may be affected by the proposed regulations can also request background information from the issuing department.

The Canada Gazette plays an important role in Canada’s regulatory process. Not only does it serve as official notice to Canadians, it also allows participation in the regulatory process by voicing opinions or providing comments as befits our democratic system.

The Canada Gazette Directorate

The Canada Gazette Directorate is part of the Consulting, Information and Shared Services Branch of Public Works and Government Services Canada.

The Directorate is made up of three teams: Editing Services, Publications Support Services and Communications and Administration Support Services.

Undivided attention to detail and dedication are required by all employees in order to follow a rigorous publication process and to ensure that strict deadlines are met for the publication of laws, regulations and other statutory instruments.

Mandate

The mandate of the Canada Gazette Directorate is to produce, publish and distribute all formats of the Canada Gazette, Part I, Part II and Part III, within the time period prescribed in the Statutory Instruments Regulations.

An excellent way to learn more about the history of the Canada Gazette is by reading the book entitled 160 Years of the Canada Gazette. This book commemorates 160 years of coordinating, producing, publishing and distributing the official newspaper of the Government of Canada. Divided into two parts, 160 Years of the Canada Gazette is about the commitment of a government to inform its citizens.

The first part tells the story of a publication that is as much a part of the growth of a nation as it is an historical account of Canada’s official newspaper. It is a story that supports the belief that every person has the right to be a part of the laws and regulations that affect the daily lives of Canada’s citizens.

The second part contains historical facts that detail the evolution of the Canada Gazette, its early years and the effects of Confederation, the creation of separate parts to publish regulations and new statutes, as well as the development of an Internet edition.

Should you wish to obtain a Portable Document Format (PDF) version of this book free of charge, please contact us. To obtain a hard copy of 160 Years of the Canada Gazette, contact bookstores selling government publications or place your order through Canadian Government Publishing, Public Works and Government Services Canada. You may also browse a printed copy of the book by visiting a local depository library.

Consultation

  • Current Consultations in the Canada Gazette
  • Government of Canada Consultation Portal

Your comments and input play an important part in Canada's regulatory process. Do you have an opinion on the types of controls that should be put in place to safeguard the environment, the foods you eat, or the drugs you buy? These are just some of the many regulations that affect the daily lives of Canadians.

The Regulatory Policy requires that federal departments and agencies demonstrate that Canadians have been consulted and that they have had an opportunity to participate in developing or modifying regulations and regulatory programmes.

Pre-publication in Part I of the Canada Gazette gives various interested groups and individuals, as well as Canadians in general, a final opportunity to review and comment on a proposed regulation at the last stages of the regulation-making process, before it is enacted and published in Part II of the Canada Gazette.

Pre-publication also gives interested parties, those stakeholders previously consulted at the beginning of the regulatory process, the opportunity to see how the final draft proposal is in keeping with previous consultation drafts.

Publishing Requirements

To ensure that your notice is published on time, please follow the steps listed below. If you do not follow these steps, we may have to delay the publication of your notice or charge additional administrative fees.

Please note that for security reasons, we do not accept notices sent by email. Furthermore, we do not send proofs for approval prior to publication; however, we always advise clients when substantial changes are made to their notices.
